For over a decade, Syrian children, women and men have had to navigate the daily reality of indiscriminate aerial and ground bombardment, and the terrible living conditions of displacement camps, and harsh winter seasons. There are severe food insecurity issues in Syria, disproportionately affecting internally displaced people, returning refugees, and host community residents, mainly due to income loss, limited resources, and inflation. Bread, a dietary staple, faces production challenges owing to destroyed bakeries, equipment shortages, and rising import costs. Islamic Relief seeks to address these issues with key interventions:
1. Providing fresh bread daily to families
2. Upgrading the machinery and equipment in the existing bakeries
3. Establishing new bakeries
4. Restoring damaged bakeries
These measures aim to boost bread availability, improve food security, promote sustainability, and create jobs, particularly for vulnerable populations.
Syria’s healthcare crisis has left 14.9m people (including 5 million displaced people) in need of life-saving care. Despite the shifting political dynamics over recent months, the burden on the healthcare system has increased, particularly for patients requiring specialised medical care such as cardiac surgeries. Islamic Relief remains a crucial lifeline for these patients providing support to the cardiology centre in Idlib, the only facility in the region capable of handling such complex cases. To address the urgent need for cardiac cases, we are supplying essential medical equipment and materials to the centre and enabling open-heart surgeries for cardiac patients. These procedures include; Valve transplants, Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG) and Septal defect repair surgeries
The cost for each patient is £5,000 to ensure high quality cardiology services for the affected population of North-Western Syria.
