This year, Flamengo FC are partnering up with Islamic Relief to raise funds for an amazing project in Mali, West Africa.  The project is called The One Safe Village and is an integrated approach to developing one of the poorest countries in the world, Mali.

It takes into consideration an entire community's needs including:

  • Food security
  • Livelihoods and income generation
  • Agriculture
  • Education
  • Water and Sanitation
  • Medical and neonatal care

We have a fundraising target of £120,000!

The Microdam

One of the components of the projet is a microdam.  This is an amazing Sadaqah Jariyah project which captures the heavy rainfall, which falls over a few days and creates a huge reservoir which is 1KM wide and 2km long! This then means that the village has water all year round, especaily throughout the dry season.

IR Mali Microdam

The benefits of the microdam are many, here are just a few:

  • The water is used to irrigate land for rice paddy fields as well as vegetable gardens as far as 2km away, through a series of irrigation channels.
  • An fish farm is integrated into the dam so local farmers can harvest fish for themselves as well as to sell in the local markets to generate an income.
  • Animals and cattle drink from the water so that they are able to survive the dry season.
  • Shallow wells in the village are replenished from the water absorbed into the ground.
