This year BIMA is partnering with Islamic Relief to help the victims of the terrible famine blighting East Africa. With the help of our members and associate members we aim to get life-saving resources delivered directly to the most needy.

The urgent and immediate needs are three: food, water and medical aid.  We aim to provide food packs to families who are food insecure and don’t know where their next meal will come from.  We will also be providing clean safe drinking water to displaced families who are now living in camps with no access to water or sanitation.  With the risk of water borne diseases such as cholera and acute diarrhea prevalent in these camps, clean water is essential in saving lives.

A major component of the funding will go to providing essential medical care.  This will be delivered through the funding of mobile medical clinics.  Each clinic has a doctor and nurses and is stocked with a range of medicine form everyday pain killers, antiseptics, bandages, disposable medical equipment to supplements and treatment for malnutrition.  The primary beneficiaries of these clinics are malnourished children, pregnant and lactating mothers.  For a child who is malnourished, these clinics are the final safety net for their survival.

This Ramadan, your Zakat has the power to save lives!

About the Crisis:

East Africa is in the grip of a severe drought.

Two successive years of failed rainy seasons, (caused by one of the worst El Niños in history) have left some parts of Somalia, Ethiopia and Kenya facing their worst drought in decades.

In South Sudan, conflict has been ongoing since 2013 forcing 700,000 refugees to flee to Sudan, sending inflation soaring such that the food is now unaffordable.

The forecast offers no relief. Urgent action is needed to avoid repeating the mistakes of 2011-2012 when famine claimed the lives of 250,000 people. Half of these people were already casualties before the famine was declared, proving that we cannot wait for the label of “famine” to be applied before we take action.
